18-year-old suspect arrested in local church fire

| September 21, 2011

A joint probe by Brownsville police and fire investigators has led to the arrest of an 18-year-old man accused of starting a fire at a local church.

Authorities allege Gabriel Hernandez started the fire at the Divine Providence Church on West Price Road because he was un-able to break in to the building.

“It’s a high priority when it comes to places of worship,” fire investigator Joel Rodriguez said.

Hernandez was arraigned Tuesday on one count of arson. Bail was set at $20,000.

The fire broke out during the early morning hours of Aug. 30, causing extensive damage to the building, Rodriguez said.

Nearly a month later, the church and other offices located in the building remain closed. Yellow caution tape ropes off a portion of the building. Damage remained visible Tuesday.
