2 Molotov Cocktails Thrown At Church

| April 6, 2010

BOSTON — Fire investigators were on the scene of what appeared to be two attacks on a local church in Ipswich early Tuesday, after two Molotov cocktail explosive devices were found at the building.

Police told NewsCenter 5 that someone tried to set the First Church in Ipswich on fire twice overnight, once just after 1 a.m. and then again at about 4:30 a.m.

The church, located at 1 Meetinghouse Green, was not damaged, officials said.

They said it appeared that someone tried to toss a fuel-filled bottle with a rag stuffed into the opening onto the roof of the church. It was found on the ground about 5 feet from a church wall. Another attempt left another bottle closer to the church a few hours later.

The fire marshal was called to the scene and investigators were searching the area with K-9 units. Two young males were spotted in the area but no arrests were made and no one was injured, police said.

Detectives said the incidents appeared to be isolated, random attacks.
