The two victims of Thursday night’s shootings at a homeowners association meeting were outgoing men who enjoyed living in their subdivision and especially helping its residents, neighbors and relatives say.
David Merritt, 73, was killed, and Marvin Fisher, 69, was in critical condition Friday night at University Hospital.
Merritt’s wife, Vivian, said in a brief interview that she and her husband had lived in the Spring Creek neighborhood for 15 years.
“I’m just shocked,” she said. “I just don’t understand why it happened.”
Barbara Pass, a former member of the homeowners association board who was not at Thursday night’s meeting at Springdale Community Church, said the suspect, Mahmoud Hindi, has lived in the subdivision for about two years. She said during that time, Hindi had repeated run-ins with the association, of which Merritt was the president.
They said the disputes were over a driveway and fence he installed in violation of subdivision deed restrictions.
