3 kids suspected of stealing Christmas toys from Pearland church

PEARLAND, Texas—Police hope the public can help find a group of thieves that stole Christmas toy donations from a Pearland church.

Police said the three suspects stole toys from St. Helen Catholic Church, located at 2209 Old Alvin, Sunday morning during back-to-back masses.

“Knowing there is church going on on the other side of those doors that is pretty brazen, to walk in here,” said Father Jim Courville, a priest at St. Helen’s.

Authorities said suspects, who appeared to be kids, were captured on video picking up the bag of toys and walking out of the church. After taking the toys, the suspects got into a gold Chrysler minivan and left the scene.

“(I was) shaking my head thinking I don’t understand. It’s beyond my comprehension,” Courville said. “Stealing is one thing, but stealing from the needy is even worse.”

Police said the suspects took about $600 worth of toys in all.

“What are these parents teaching these 10- to 12-year-old kids? That is how you are supposed to get things in life? You steal from a church you steal gifts for needy people?” Courville asked.
