30 students, leaders inside church when fire started

AMES, Iowa —  An Ames woman has been arrested and charged in a church fire Tuesday night.

Firefighters responded to the fire at the St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church at 2210 Lincoln Way just after 9:30 p.m.

When firefighters arrived, they said they could see flames through the window on the second story. The building was also full of smoke.

Firefighters quickly extinguished the fire and began to ventilate the building.

Police said the cause of the fire was considered arson.

Tina Meyer, 51, was charged with first-degree arson. Meyer was taken to the Story County Jail.
