5 Churches, 3 Businesses Burglarized In 2 Weeks

| October 2, 2011

TOCCOA, Ga. — A 20-year-old northeast Georgia man has been arrested after investigators said he confessed to breaking into five churches and three businesses in the Toccoa area during a two-week period.

Shane Black is facing nine charges, eight of which are felonies.

The burglary spree started at the beginning of September, when St. Matthias' Episcopal Church on East Tugalo Street, reported a break-in.

"Nothing had been taken," said the Rev. Mary Demmler, St. Matthias' rector. "Didn't think too much of it. You know, filed police report and did everything we were supposed to do and started talking about ways to secure the building more, but you don't expect it to happen immediately."

Within a week, Demmler said the church was broken into again, and this time the cross she wears on Sundays and other small items were taken. In the church office, a safe had been pried open, but there was no money inside.

Church members decided to start securing the building better, but it didn't help. The church was targeted for the third time in nine days.
