6 DeLand-area churches vandalized

| May 10, 2012

DeLand police and Volusia County deputies are investigating a string of church break-ins in and around DeLand over the weekend.

Three churches — Kepler Road Baptist Church, Holy Presence Episcopal Church and Seventh Day Adventist Church — are in an unincorporated part of Volusia and all within a half mile of each other on Kepler Road. Another church, Day Spring Community, about five miles away at Spring Garden Avenue, was also vandalized, sheriff's reports show.

In all, six churches were vandalized.

"It certainly is possible that they are related based on similarities. But there is no way to be certain at this time," said sheriff's spokesman Brandon Haught.

Those similarities include windows and front entrances being smashed, fire extinguishers discharged indoors and contents of refrigerators emptied onto the floors of kitchens in the churches but nothing being stolen from the churches, reports show.

These burglaries occurred overnight Saturday into Sunday, sheriff's deputies said.

"No idea," Haught said, when asked if investigators believe the churches were targeted for any reason.
