78-year-old woman charged with taking $161,000 from Jacksonville church

| January 22, 2012

Chad Stewart said he and his family did what they could to make life easier for their seemingly sweet and frugal wheelchair-bound neighbor.

Stewart helped cut the yard of Betty Barnes' modest one-story home in Jacksonville's Sans Souci neighborhood, where she lives alone. His mother would make periodic trips to Winn-Dixie to buy Barnes groceries and get her medications.

Stewart said others also pitched in to help Barnes, 78. When knee and hip problems left her disabled, parishioners at the small church where she works as a secretary built a wheel-chair ramp to her front door. Just Friday a parishioner stopped by her home to help fix an appliance.

This all for a woman now charged with bilking Terry Road Baptist Church of $161,000.

"I thought it was some kind of mistake and I still do," Stewart, 49, said of Barnes' arrest Tuesday. "She didn't live above her means. All the people at the church loved her."
