| September 17, 2011

Charges were dropped Tuesday against an 18-year-old man accused of burglarizing two Rice Lake churches after a prosecutor's motion during his preliminary court hearing. District Attorney Angela Beranek had no comment on the matter after the hearing.

Austin Wold, 18, of Barron was arrested on Sept. 5 and charged with two counts of burglary of a building or dwelling as a party to a crime for allegedly breaking into First Lutheran Church in Rice Lake and Rice Lake Baptist Church on Thursday, Aug. 18.

He and Westly Billon, 17, of Chetek appeared in court Tuesday for their preliminary hearings before Judge James Babler at 2 p.m. represented by two separate attorneys. Approximately 7 members from the churches that were burglarized sat in the courtroom to listen to the hearings.

Billon allegedly admitted to investigators during an in-custody interview at the Barron County Jail that he and Wold broke into First Lutheran Church in Rice Lake and Rice Lake Baptist Church on Thursday, Aug. 18, and took $15 in cash from an upper level office, a set of keys, $30 in cash and a bottle of non-alcoholic wine from the two churches.
