Affidavit: Church treasurer blamed theft on stress

| August 22, 2011

SOUTHINGTON – In early December, Kelly Saucier confessed to the pastor of Plantsville Congregational Church that she was resigning from her position as treasurer and had done a terrible thing, according to a warrant for her arrest. She told the Rev. Richard A. Koenig that she stole "about $53,000 or $54,000."

Saucier was charged this week with embezzling nearly $300,000 from the church from 2005 to 2010.

Saucier, 45, told Koenig she was under a lot of stress from her job and was worried about her son, who had suffered a serious head injury while rock climbing. Saucier told Koenig the loss of her mother and the demands of her family were also sources of great stress. Saucer felt that no else cared, so "why should she?" She began drinking at night and spent too much money shopping, according to the warrant. When the credit card bills came in, Saucier took money from the church to pay them. When Koenig asked her how long the stealing had gone on, Saucier said it was from about the start of the summer of 2009.
