Ala. Court Upholds Sentence In 1994 Church Shooting

| October 10, 2010

Montgomery, Alabama – Alabama's top court has refused to hear the appeal of a Madison County man sentenced to life without parole for the 1994 shooting death of a man outside a church.

The Alabama Supreme Court on Friday upheld a ruling in August by an appeals court involving Randall Lee Whitt, who was convicted of the shooting death of James Maples and the attempted murder in the shooting of Mary Humphries.

He was convicted in September 1996 of killing 33-year-old Maples and wounding his lover during a robbery. Humphries testified that she and Maples were having an affair and often met behind the Flint River Primitive Baptist Church near Ryland.

David Anthony Coffman received the same sentence as Whitt for his role in the crime.
