Altercation at North Carolina church prompts police response

| February 1, 2011

FLETCHER, N.C. — A morning of worship at a church in Henderson County turned violent Sunday when a series of fights broke out after a late-morning service.

About 30 law-enforcement officers from five agencies in Henderson and Buncombe counties responded just after noon to Greater New Zion Baptist Church on U.S. Highway 25, after a sheriff's deputy who was on the scene for routine security patrol called about a fight that had broken out, said Capt. Jerry Rice, public information officer for the Henderson County Sheriff's Office.

Rice said the incident is under investigation and it was not immediately known what started the initial fight. No arrests had been made as of Sunday night, and there were no injuries reported.
