Amboy couple suspected of church burglaries

An Amboy woman taken into custody in Winnebago County last week is a suspect in recent local church burglaries, said Ogle County Sheriff Greg Beitel.

Beitel said Tuesday that Nicole M. Rutherford, 27, was arrested in Winnebago County for a church burglary there.

Winnebago County Sheriff Dick Meyers said Tuesday afternoon that Rutherford was arrested May 13 in connection with a church burglary in Pecatonica and is currently being held in the Winnebago County Jail.

He said she is a suspect in six other church burglaries in Winnebago County — four in Pecatonica and two in Winnebago.

Beitel said Rutherford may have also been involved in six recent church burglaries in Ogle County.

“There’s two she has admitted to. We think she may have been involved in the others,” he said.

Police are still looking for Brian M. Dees, 30, Amboy, who is also a suspect in the burglaries, Beitel said.

Break-ins were discovered May 11 at the Leaf River Baptist Church, 6941 N. Mt. Morris Rd., and the Leaf River United Methodist Church, 104 E. Third St. (Ill. 72), Leaf River.

Beitel, who just returned May 15 from two weeks in China, said he did not know the locations of the other four church burglaries.

Rutherford and Dees were convicted in 2004 of burglarizing churches in Rochelle, Kings, Chana, and Holcomb, and rural Oregon.

Rutherford was sentenced to four years in the Illinois Department of Corrections for her part in the burglaries, and Dees was sentenced to six years in the IDOC.
