Wayne County, West Virginia – After four hours of deliberation, a jury of six men and six women convicted Army deserter Stephen Wilson of second-degree murder and first-degree robbery.

Wilson and fellow deserter Daniel Smith have been found guilty of robbing and killing Rev. Mark McCalla, a minister at Highlawn Presbyterian Church in Huntington, West Virginia. McCalla’s body was found June 19, 2008 at a shooting range located in the Beech Fork Wildlife Management Area.

After the verdict, McCalla’s family and members of his church looked relieved and quietly left the court. Wilson looked unfazed and even smiled at his attorneys. Wilson’s father, Gregg Wilson, appeared tired and saddened by the news.

In a separate trial, Smith was convicted of first-degree murder and first-degree robbery. He was sentenced to life in prison for murder and 90 years for robbery. Smith will not be eligible for parole for more than 37 years.
