Arrest to throw light on church burglaries

Police in Goa have arrested a man in connection with a convent school burglary, in which students’ trophies and brass-plated shields were stolen.

Sanjay Rathod was arrested on July 12 in connection with the July 6 robbery in Bethany Convent High School at Sao Jose de Areal, south of Panaji, the state capital.

Police said they have recovered some of the stolen items, which have been damaged, from Rathod. The brass components in some of the items had been removed and sold to a scrap dealer.

The police “certainly deserve praise for achieving a breakthrough,” said school headmistress Sister Ida Lobo.

She said police told her the arrest has helped them solve two temple burglary cases as well.

Police are apparently searching for Rathod’s accomplice to throw light on other burglary cases, including thefts in places of worship across the state.

In the last few years, a series of antique thefts have troubled churches in this former Portuguese colony, which is rich in ancient artifacts.
