Arson Attack Reported on Hassidic Hostel in Central Ukraine

A fire broke out in Uman [Cherkasy Region]. A hostel for pilgrim Hassids located close to Jewish leader [Rabbi] Nachman’s grave and a synagogue went on fire. Witnesses said three unidentified individuals pelted the building with Molotov cocktails.

The synagogue’s security guards started to extinguish the fire. Local emergency services joined them shortly. The criminals were not caught.

The incident took place one month before Rosh Hashana which annually attracts Hassids from all over the world. This year a record-high number of pilgrims, which are 20,000, is expected to visit.
