Arson defendant concludes testimony

SPRINGFIELD – A defendant charged in federal court with a hate crime in connection with an alleged racially motivated church arson finished up on the witness stand on Tuesday, where he had been arguing he gave a false confession to police in 2009.

Michael F. Jacques Jr., 26, is one of three men indicted for torching the Macedonia Church of God in Christ in November of 2008, hours after President Barack Obama was elected.

Two others charged have already pleaded guilty and admitted they doused the partially constructed church on Tinkham Road with gasoline and set it ablaze the denounce the results of the presidential election. The building was empty and no one was hurt.
