ATF Releases Church Arson Sketches

| February 12, 2010

During a news conference today law enforcement agencies released three sketches of “persons of interest” in the recent string of church fires in East Texas.

Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms agent Robert Champion, who is leading the investigation, said the sketches were taken from eyewitness accounts. He asked that the community for assistance in the apprehension of the individual or individuals responsible for nine confirmed arson fires.

There is a $25,000 reward for information leading to the arrest of the persons responsible, he said. The ATF can be contacted at 1-888-ATF-FIRE or 903-675-0061 and 903-675-0062 with clues or information regarding the crimes.

“The churches are the soul of the community and well know that,” Champion said. “We have a perpetrator and a serial arsonist out there and we want to put a stop to it.”

Champion reiterated the combined effort of multiple local, state and federal law enforcement agencies.

Smith County Sheriff Department Lt. Tony Dana said community members remain diligent but expressed the need to remain cautious and report any suspicious activity.

“Be a good witness,” he said. “Take down a license plate number, hair color, height, be a good witness and contact your local enforcement agency but do not approach these individuals. We don't know how desperate they are and we don't want anyone to get hurt.”
