Attack on Belmont church ‘malicious’

| October 4, 2011

BELMONT Vandals threw a concrete block through a stained-glass window late Friday or early Saturday and smashed or stole anything they could find inside the education building of a church that is still recovering from weather damage this summer.

They poured paint over two pianos and ripped out their strings. They dropped something heavy onto the glass of a new, $30,000 copier. They punched holes into walls. But mostly, they threw books and stationary and wall decorations around, making a mess that some of the 417 church members tried to clean up over the weekend.

In all, the things vandalized or stolen will cost Holy Comforter Lutheran Church about $50,000. The Rev. Mike Varn, pastor, wasn't sure Sunday how much of the damage to the building would be covered by insurance.
