Bail reduced for Bergen synagogue firebomb suspect from Lodi

| May 26, 2012

HACKENSACK — An appeals court on Tuesday reduced the bail from $2.5 million to $1 million for Aakash Dalal, one of two Lodi teens accused in arsons at local synagogues earlier this year.

A two-judge Appellate Division panel called the original bail amount excessive and said trial court abused its discretion in setting the higher bail.

The 19-year-old Dalal, charged with bias intimidation and aggravated arson, was ordered to surrender his passport as a condition of the reduced bail.

“I would prefer the bail to be even lower,” said Chris DiLorenzo, Dalal’s attorney. “I still think it’s excessive but it’s much more realistic in terms of what this case is all about.”
