B’nai Brith Canada working with Police to solve swastika defacement spree across Toronto

| August 15, 2011

TORONTO – B’nai Brith Canada has urged greater vigilance during the period surrounding the Jewish Fast Day of Tisha B’Av (Tuesday), a day set aside to mourn the destruction of the Jewish Temples in Jerusalem.
This comes following reports of three incidents of vandalism in the Toronto area last week. In these incidents vandals used stencils to spraypaint black and red swastikas in visible locations. The latest incident occurred at the Beth Tikvah Synagogue on Bayview Avenue where a swastika and the words ‘Islam will rule’ were spraypainted near the school entrance last week in broad daylight.

Frank Dimant, CEO of B’nai Brith Canada, said, “We commend the proactive response of Rabbi [Jarrod] Grover of the synagogue who, along with other Torontonians, called the Anti-Hate Hotline after discovering the defacement. We remain in close contact with police as the pattern of related incidents unfolds.
