Yad Vashem condemns ‘appalling’ attack on US Holocaust Museum

Israel’s Yad Vashem Holocaust Memorial expressed shock on Wednesday over the “appalling” shooting attack on the US Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington D.C.

“Initial reports indicate that this shooting is the work of an anti-Semitic white supremacist, who obviously understood the symbolism of the target he chose,” Yad Vashem spokeswoman Iris Rosenberg said in a statement.

“The Museum in addition to being a memorial to the victims of the Holocaust, is dedicated to educating against this kind of hate. His target makes this shooting that much more heinous.”

Yad Vashem Chairman Avner Shalev spoke to USHMM Director Sara Bloomfield to express his support, and deep empathy, to her and all the Museum staff and to wish the wounded security guards a speedy recovery, she said.

The shooting was also condemned by the chief Nazi hunter of the Los Angeles-based Simon Wiesenthal Center.

“On many levels it is a very symbolic target,
and it is not surprising that someone who espouses white supremacy would want to attack an institution like that since Holocaust museums are the antithesis of this persons racist ideology and anti-Semitism,” said Dr. Efraim Zuroff, the organization’s Israel Director.

    Details on White Supremacist Suspect

Police are confirming that the name of suspect is James Von Brunn, a white supremacist, born 1920.

On a rambling, racist and bitterly anti-semitic website a man who identifies himself as James W. von Brunn claims to be a former World War II PT boat captain who was decorated for his conduct in battle, and was an advertising executive and film producer in New York City.

He claims to be a member of Mensa, “the high-IQ society,” and in 1981 was convicted in D.C. Superior Court for an offense that is not made clear. He was “convicted by a Negro jury, Jew/Negro attorneys, and sentenced to prison for eleven years by a Jew judge. A Jew/Negro/White Court of Appeals denied his appeal. He served 6.5 years in federal prison.”

He says he is now an artist and author living on Maryland’s Eastern Shore.
He refers on his website to “Marxist/Liberal/Jews bankers,” and provides this information in a poisonous biographical entry.

“Over my years of adversity, it became clear to me that a JEW strategy had emerged: “Kill the Best Gentiles!” The tactics were WAR & DEBT…I was chased from one job to another for not genuflecting before God’s Chosen. When a Jew CEO deliberately farts in a business meeting, to express his contempt, I seem to react unfavorably.”

WASHINGTON – Authorities say at least two people have been shot at the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington.

U.S. Park Police spokesman, Sergeant David Schlosser, says a gunman entered the museum with a “long gun.” They don’t know yet if it was a rifle or a shot gun. At this point, they don’t know if the gunman made it through the metal detectors.

The gunman fired at a security guard , hitting the guard. At that point 2 other security officers opened fire on the gunman, hitting him.

Both the shooter and the guard were transported to George Washington University Hospital.

FOX 5’s Paul Wagner has confirmed the identity of the shooter at the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum. He is James W. von Brunn, a known white supremacist born in 1920.

A bio from von Brunn’s book website:

James W. von Brunn holds a BachSci Journalism degree from a mid-Western university where he was president of SAE and played varsity football.

During WWII he served as PT-Boat captain, Lt. USNR, receiving a Commendation and four battle stars. For twenty years he was an advertising executive and film-producer in New York City. He is a member of Mensa, the high-IQ society.

In 1981 Von Brunn attempted to place the treasonous Federal Reserve Board of Governors under legal, non-violent, citizens arrest. He was tried in a Washington, D.C. Superior Court; convicted by a Negro jury, Jew/Negro attorneys, and sentenced to prison for eleven years by a Jew judge. A Jew/Negro/White Court of Appeals denied his appeal. He served 6.5 years in federal prison.

He is now an artist and author and lives on Maryland’s Eastern Shore.

The museum normally has a heavy security presence with guards positioned both inside and outside the museum. All visitors are required to pass through metal detectors at the entrance, and bags are screened.

The museum, located just off the National Mall near the Washington Monument, is a popular tourist attraction. It draws about 1.7 million visitors each year.

A gunman armed with a shotgun walked into the U.S. Holocaust Museum in dowtown Washington today and opened fire on a security guard before being shot and seriously wounded himself by at least one other guard, authorities said.

The security guard and the gunman were both transported to George Washington University Hospital with serious injuries, police said.

Sgt. David Schlosser, a spokesman for the U.S. Park Police, said the security guard and the gunman were apparently the only two persons who were shot. Initial reports said at least one other person sustained gunshot wounds.

U.S. Park Police said a gunman armed with a shotgun opened fire on the security guard and that other security guards returned fire. The gunman was reported wounded.

The shooting was reported to police at 12:52 p.m., and officers rushed to the scene just south of Independence Ave. bordering the Mall.

D.C. Fire Department spokesman Alan Etter said there was no immediate information on the shooter. He said two men were transported to a hospital with “serious” gunshot wounds.

One witness, Dave Unruh, of Wichita, Kan., said he was waiting to enter the museum when he heard one gunshot, then a sequence of four or five gunshots. He said he then heard someone scream, “Hit the floor!” He and his wife, Karen, and their two teenage grandchildren hit the floor and were subsequently herded out of the building by authorities.

Unruh called the experience “intensely, extremely frightening.”

By 1 p.m., the street in front of the museum was blocked by a museum police officer. A group of schoolchildren was rushed onto a chartered luxury coach and the bus driver struggled to pull away from the block.

At least two people were shot at the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum Wednesday, according to police.

A person walked into the museum with a rifle and shot a guard, according to D.C. police spokeswoman Traci Hughes.

Alan Etter of D.C. Fire and EMS said three adult men suffered injuries. Two had serious gunshot wounds and were transported to a local hospital. A third suffered minor injuries, possibly from broken glass, and was treated at the scene, Etter said.

One person is in custody in connection with the shooting, police said. SWAT teams are searching the museum.

There have been reports that one or more police officers may have been shot.

D.C. police said the shooter also was shot by police or museum security, according to MSNBC. Armed security officers in D.C. answer to the D.C. police chief.

The FBI reported one person in critical condition.

NBC’s Pete Williams reported that the gunman was born in 1920. There are rumors he sustained life-threatening injuries.

One witness said she heard three gunshots inside the museum. She said she heard one shot, then heard a security guard yell, “Run upstairs!” followed by at least two more shots.

The museum normally has a heavy security presence with guards positioned both inside and outside. All visitors are required to pass through metal detectors at the entrance, and bags are screened.

The mother of a Massachusetts teenager said students on a school trip to the museum heard several gunshots before they were evacuated from the building. Sandy Perkins said her daughter, Abigail, called her shortly after the shooting. Abigail told her mother that some of her friends were very shaken, but all were otherwise fine.

The teens did not see where the shots were coming from before they were safely evacuated to buses outside the museum.

The museum, located just off the National Mall near the Washington Monument, is a popular tourist attraction. It draws about 1.7 million visitors each year.
