Burglar attacks Connellsville priest at Immaculate Conception

A Roman Catholic priest at Immaculate Conception Church was assaulted when he apparently walked in on a burglary in progress at the Connellsville rectory last week, a church spokesman said today.

The Rev. Joseph Bonafed was treated and released at Highlands Hospital in Connellsville after he was struck on the head with a blunt object sometime Wednesday evening, according to Catholic Diocese of Greensburg spokesman Jerry Zufelt. The church is located at 148 E. Crawford Avenue.

"Our understanding is that Father Bonafed was returning from a parish event through the rectory when this occurred. He was not able to celebrate Mass Sunday, but we expect him back shortly," Zufelt said.

The masked man was reportedly dressed in black. It is unknown whether the suspect fled with anything, Zufelt said.

Zufelt referred further inquiries to Connellsville police. Attempts to reach Chief Ed McSheffrey for comment were unsuccessful.

Zufelt said that the assault occurred sometime Wednesday evening. He said Bonafed "required a few stitches."

Bonafed is also administrator of St. Rita and St. John the Evangelist churches, also in Connellsville.
