Burglar breaks into Wareham church, steals pastor’s wallet

WAREHAM — Hours after Pastor Rob Fantoni concluded his Sunday night Bible study, sin smashed its way through a front window of the Heaven’s Gate Church.

Police say a 16-year-old Onset male broke into the church, located at 3090 Cranberry Highway, by smashing one of the building’s bay windows with a rock around 12:30 a.m. Monday. The teen then stole an electric guitar, laptop computer, wireless microphone and the pastor’s cell phone and wallet, police said. The wallet contained credit cards and a small amount of cash.

The teen, whose name was not released because of his age, was arrested within 12 hours after the burglary Monday, reports the Standard-Times. A witness noticed him bicycling down the road with some of the stolen items from the church early Monday. Police subsequently searched an Onset home where the items were recovered and the teen was arrested.

Fantoni, who had led a discussion on the First Corinthians that ended around 8 Sunday night, left his wallet and cell phone in the church, something he says he "never does." He swung by on his way to the gym the following morning and found the smashed window and called police.
