A burglar has been given a jail sentence for carrying knives into one of Cambridge’s most iconic churches.
Kevin Roche, who has mental health issues, stole the kitchen knives from a bed and breakfast and was later found with them in Great St Mary’s, the Cambridge University church.
The 42-year-old, who was jailed for more than three months, admitted stealing the blades to police, but insisted he did not scoff the biscuits – believed to include Jammie Dodgers and malted milks – at the guest house in Warkworth Terrace, Market.
Roche, of no fixed address who has a long list of previous convictions, admitted burglary of a commercial dwelling and possession of an offensive weapon at Cambridge Crown Court.
Sara Walker, prosecuting, said Roche entered the guest house on February 5 and took the knives, coffee and biscuits before he called his care worker from the church later that day to tell him he had knives on him.
