A teenage burglar tried to get into a coffin containing a body as he ransacked a chapel, a court heard.

Thousands of pounds of damage was caused to the chapel when it was targeted the night before a funeral.

Oak panelled doors were smashed through, an antique organ was damaged, all copper piping was ripped out leading to the heating system being condemned and doors were kicked in beyond repair.

Even the church organ fund was swiped.

When undertaker Robert Protheroe arrived at the 150-year-old Tabernacle Chapel, on Brecon Road, Merthyr Tydfil on June 22 to prepare for the funeral he discovered a scene of devastation, the court was told.

And when he opened the locked door of the minister’s room – where the body was being kept – he saw a hand reaching the through a smashed door to take the last of the spoils then disappearing.
