Chabad Center reports theft of three silver religious items

| September 22, 2011

WAYNE – According to the Wayne Police, silver religious objects were reported stolen from the Chabad Center of Passaic County.

Rabbi Michael Gurkov told police that the items were last used on Sept. 10 and he noticed them missing on Sept. 12. The Chabad Center is located on Ratzer Road.

The items are a silver pointer used to read the Torah during services, and two silver breastplates which cover the Torahs. Gurkov told police that the missing items are "antiques," at least 100 years old, and that he received them from a synagogue in Paterson. The stolen objects are kept in a cabinet, located behind a sliding wooden door, which has a lock, but was not locked at the time of the burglary. Also encased in the cabinet are the Torahs and the silver items that cover the Torahs. Included in the cabinet but not stolen were the three Torahs, three silver crowns, another smaller breastplate, and another pointer.
