Choir, children watch woman stabbed outside church, says witness

| August 5, 2011

A church celebration was marred by violence Wednesday after a woman was stabbed in front of children and choir members, according to a witness.

The stabbing occurred shortly before 9 p.m. outside The Greater centennial A.M.E Zion Church at 312 So. 8th Ave. in Mount Vernon as a choir left the building and an end-of-session party for the Jesus Truth Seekers day camp broke up.

According to Lawrence Davis, 44, a maintenance technician at the church, a woman was coming out of the church at the same time as the choir and day camp celebrants when a dark-skinned man wearing all black approached her and then stabbed her in the upper shoulder area.

The attacker then fled.
