Church arson suspect seeking new attorney

| September 14, 2011

Claiming he is not receiving proper legal representation, Victor Rudolph Clegg Jr., the Burlington man authorities say started the April 16 fire that gutted the Union Baptist Church, has asked a judge to replace his court-appointed public defender.

Clegg told District Court Judge Cynthia Danielson on Monday his attorney, James Carter, has referred to him as a "firebug."

"I feel he doesn't represent me properly," said Clegg, who is charged with second-degree arson and second-degree burglary.

Shackled and wearing a jail-issued orange jumpsuit, the 43-year-old Clegg said there was an instance he inquired about Carter filing a request for a bond review in the hopes of getting released under pretrial supervision without posting bail.

Clegg claimed during the meeting Carter said, "the community may not want a firebug released."
