Church arsonist gets 14 years, pastor’s forgiveness

| December 27, 2011

A bishop of the predominantly black church in Springfield that burned to the ground hours after the historic election of President Obama yesterday said he has forgiven the three men who torched the house of worship as the U.S. District Court sentenced one of them to nearly 14 years behind bars.

“We weren’t vengeful. We placed our trust in the criminal justice system, and a decision has been rendered,” said Bryant Robinson Jr., bishop of the Macedonia Church of God in Christ. “I had forgiven them personally, but I cannot be accepting of their behavior.”

Arsonist Michael Jacques, 27, of Springfield was sentenced yesterday to 166 months in prison and ordered to pay nearly $1.6 million in restitution.

Jacques was found guilty April 14 of conspiracy against civil rights, destruction of religious property and use of fire to commit a felony.
