Church Arsonists Bourque, McAllister Receive Maximum Sentences

| January 11, 2011

"My heart is breaking, and it's not right. It's not mercy," Kimberly Bourque, mother of 22-year-old Jason Robert Bourque, said in the hallway outside the Smith County 114th District courtroom after Judge Christi Kennedy pronounced life sentences for the arson charges. The two also received 20-year sentences on the attempted arson charges.

"No one was hurt — murderers don't get these harsh sentences," Ms. Bourque said. She added that she did not condone what her son or Robert George McAllister, 20, had done when they burned down a string of East Texas churches beginning on New Year's Day in 2010.

Bourque's grandmother, Brenda Steel, said the men's sentences were not justice. "Why give them life for each sentence?" she asked.
