Church attack a case of theft: police

| February 17, 2010

MYSORE/MANDYA: Thirteen days after St Mathias Church in Malavalli was vandalized, Mandya police have confirmed it was only a case of theft.

Three persons — Lokesh, Siddu and Zakir — have been arrested; an accomplice, Izaz, is at large. Police said Lokesh is involved in robbery cases and Siddu is Izaz's acquaintance. Zakir, who runs a `guzari' shop, has criminal cases against him.

IGP (southern range) Jeevankumar V Gaonkar said three investigating teams were set up following the incident at the six-decade-old church. Before that, police found three constructions workers from West Bengal were robbed of mobile phones by a group in the vicinity.

On suspicion, the police brought in Siddu for questioning. He is said to have confessed during interrogation, and named the accomplices.

Gaonkar said ten saris stolen from the church were sold to a woman in Malvalli, and other valuables to Zakir. Also, the accused thought the crown on a statue was made of gold and damaged glass panes of the showcase to remove it. Police said they pulled down the pillar on which the Eucharistic Cup was placed, looking for cash.

The police are yet to make any headway in the desecration of a statue of Mother Mary at Holy Family Church, Hinkal, in January.
