Church badly damaged in ‘arson attack’

| May 20, 2014

The fire broke out at Whiteabbey Methodist Church on the Shore Road on Saturday night and caused extensive damage to the kitchen at the rear of the building.

Reverend Pauline Lorimer told UTV she believes the incident, which was discovered at around 11.30pm, was started after people broke into the church and set a number of fires.

Police said they are still investigating the cause.

Rev Lorimer said: "Late on last night they smashed the front door, got into the church, into the kitchen and set a few small fires in the kitchen.

"It is now destroyed and one of the halls is badly smoke damaged. Police think it may have been young people up to mischief, getting in and having a bit of excitement for the night.
