Church faces fire and burglary with faith

The easy question to ask, Pastor Al Saucedo told his congregation Sunday morning, is "Who would burn a church?" But that is not the question that a Christian should be asking.

The right question, he told the worshippers packed into the small annex building behind the fire-gutted main sanctuary of the Valley View Church of God of Prophecy in east Bakersfield, is "What would cause someone to burn a church?"

For Saucedo, who was awakened in the early hours of July 21 by a church member's emergency phone call, last week's burglary and arson at his church was a challenge to his flock to put Christ's teachings into action.

"Nobody asked us if we wanted our building burned," he told the diverse crowd in English, his words echoed immediately by a translator in Spanish. But, "We have access to a divine sense of reaction." Those who are asking the easy question, Saucedo said, are looking for someone to blame, someone to take revenge on.

Asking the right question, he argued, leads the Christian to the book of First Timothy and to prayer.
