Church group treasurer sentenced for theft

| September 11, 2009

A volunteer who admitted to stealing nearly $50,000 from a church group has been ordered to pay the money back.

A provincial court judge on Wednesday also ordered Marion Patricia Hickman of Stephenville to serve a 14-month conditional sentence and two years probation.

Hickman, 58, is a former treasurer of St. Anne’s Guild, a charity group that holds bingos and other fundraisers for St. Stephen’s Parish in Stephenville.

She was charged with theft over $5,000 after a police investigation prompted by a complaint from another volunteer member. Hickman pleaded guilty during a court appearance in July.

A release Friday from the RCMP said Hickman was the group’s treasurer between June of 2007 and June of 2008.
