Church intern held in slaying of pastor

The panic crackled in their voices as they gathered outside the burning rectory.

Where was Father William? Where was the priest who saved their aging church and learned Polish, the only language some of them knew?

As the parishioners grieved, the pastor's intern, Daniel Montgomery, was there to comfort them. He hugged them and rubbed their backs. When firefighters carried Father William Gulas' body from the rectory, he said a prayer. And later, he passed out communion.

But yesterday, two days after the fire, Cleveland police said his story and his sympathy were a sham. They said that the intern shot his mentor in the chest and set the fire to cover up the crime.
