Church members tell harrowing tale of surviving shooter

| October 29, 2011

FOREST GROVE — As he was applying pressure to the gunshot wound in his friend's stomach, Jayde Roof told his wife to grab his shotgun in case the unseen shooter appeared.

He told the others not to let the shooter get anyone else.

Moments before, according to Sheriff's reports, they were shooting clay pigeons on the lawn of Forest Grove Baptist Church in the brisk autumn evening on Thursday, Oct. 20. Between volleys, the air was cut by a sharp and rapid hail of shots from across the street.

Robert Matthew Judah was hit. He went down shouting.

While Roof ran to help him, Thomas Jackson Sr. grabbed his two sons and ran inside the church. They weren't alone there.
