Church official interrupts burglary

EAST WENATCHEE — The bad news: A burglar punched a 65-year-old church official in the face when he tried to stop him from taking items from the Eastside church about 7 p.m. Monday.

The good news: Images of the burglar and an accomplice were caught on video as they burglarized the church.

The church official, whose name was not released, told police that an alarm at the church, which is connected to his cell phone, went off about 6:45 p.m., said Dan Reierson, assistant chief with the East Wenatchee Police Department. The church official drove from his home to the church, the Pentecostal Church of God, 155 N. Iowa Ave., where he saw a black Dodge Caravan parked behind the building.

“As he approached the vehicle, a male advanced toward him rapidly and punched him the face,” Reierson said. “The victim said this all happened very fast.”

The church official dove under the vehicle but two men pulled him out and then drove off. At some point, the church official dialed 911.

Reierson said the two men got away with video equipment, power tools, a big screen TV and two welders.

The official was not badly hurt in the altercation, Reierson said. He declined a ride to the hospital in an ambulance.

Reierson said both of the suspects were wearing purple hooded sweatshirts and purple knit caps. One of the caps had a Raiders emblem on it.

Reierson said he does not have heights of the men but the shorter of the two men had a goatee. The other man, who was clean-shaven, was “significantly” taller than the man with the goatee.

Reierson said he got the descriptions from the video images, which were taken when the men’s motions inside the church triggered a video camera to turn on.

Reierson asked that anyone with information about the burglary and assault to call 884-9511, Ext. 11.
