Church robbed of $19,000 on Easter Sunday

| April 28, 2011

Thieves stole $19,000 of collection money during a break-in at a Farrer church on Easter Sunday.

The St Augustine's Church in Beasley Street was broken into between 1pm and 4.30pm on Easter Sunday, with entry being gained to the building through a bedroom window at the priest's residence attached to the church.

The offender took a small safe containing money collected in the week leading up to Easter and which was to be given to charities and used for the upkeep of the church.

The theft has shocked the staff and parishioners of St Augustine's, a Catholic church which services Canberra's Croatian community.

Pastoral Council member Loui Seselja described the theft as callous, and said it had left a significant dent in the church's funds.
