Church van burns to ground Sunday morning

DENISON, TX – Members of the St. Paul Baptist Church in Denison arrived Sunday morning to find their church van destroyed by fire.

Member and Deacon James Dawson lives nearby and said he heard a loud boom around 7:00 a.m. when the van exploded. He immediately went to the church and found the van fully engulfed in flames in the church parking lot.

Denison Fire Marshal John Weda said his preliminary report is the fire started in the engine and looks like an electrical short. But he said without thorough tests, it will be unclear as to whether it was arson or accident.

The Church had used the large passenger van for ten years, taking kids to Sunday school and members on long trips across Texoma and all over Texas.

Dawson drove the van for the past six years, and said it will be difficult to get along without it.

"This is God's property that's been destroyed, it's not just an ordinary van, I mean you can look at it as an ordinary van but it's not an ordinary van, it served church purposes,” said Dawson.

The church is working with its insurance company to assess the cause of the fire and work on replacing the van. They hope to buy a used-van to replace it.
