CORONA: Church bookkeeper suspected of stealing thousands

| February 18, 2012

A longtime bookkeeper at a Corona church has been arrested on suspicion of stealing $220,000 from the ministry since 2003.

Charges have not yet been filed against Gigi Wellott, 47, of Corona. Prosecutors are still reviewing the allegations and do not have an estimate on when charges would be filed, said John Hall, spokesman for the Riverside County District Attorney’s Office.

Hall said he could not comment further on the case.

Wellott was arrested on Dec. 16on suspicion of one felony count of embezzlement. She is free on $228,000 bail, court records show.

The former Corona United Methodist Church bookkeeper is suspected of stealing about $220,000 from the church over seven years beginning shortly after she was elected treasurer in June 2003. She resigned in June 2010 after a church committee performed an audit.

It was unclear why more than a year passed between Wellott’s resignation and her arrest. Corona Police were not available for comment Friday. Calls to Wellott’s home and place of business Friday were not immediately returned.
