Couple charged in church theft to make plea

NEW CASTLE — The Mahoningtown couple charged with embezzling more than $335,000 from St. Vitus Church is expected to plead on Wednesday.

The Lawrence County district attorney’s office said guilty pleas are expected from August Santillo, 52, and his wife, Kim Santillo, 49, both of 404 W. Clayton St. were charged last year with theft by unlawful taking or disposition, theft by disposition and Kim is additionally charged with criminal conspiracy. Both are free on bond.

The plea is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. Wednesday before Lawrence County Judge John W. Hodge.

The couple had been scheduled to go to trial this month. Pretrial conferences before Judge Hodge had been schedueld but canceled for the past two weeks.

The couple was charged last year with amassing more than $335,000 from St. Vitus Church, where Kim was a church secretary. Court documents state that her husband, who was a fundraiser for the church’s school, assisted his wife wife with her duties, whiich included making bank deposits. He was also coordinator fot he gift card progoram, a fundraiser for the school.
