Crime-Fighting Bishop Carjacked In Front Of Church

| March 21, 2011

NEWARK, NJ (PIX11) — A bishop who works closely with city leaders to fight Newark’s increasing crime problem was carjacked as he pulled up to a 5:30 p.m. bible study Wednesday evening.

Bishop Jethro James got out of his truck to unlock the gates of the Paradise Baptist Church in Newark, just like he has for almost 20 years, when he says he felt a “pressure” in his back.

“One of the young men kicked me … and of course I fell through the gate,” James said, “I turned around and simply said, ‘What are you doing?’”

His assailant was already in the driver seat of his truck, however, and accelerated sharply, forcing James to jump out of the way of his own vehicle.,0,4563318.story
