| June 13, 2011

TORONTO — Seven in 10 religiously motivated hate crimes in Canada in 2009 were committed against Jews, Statistics Canada reported last week.

A total of 1,473 such incidents were reported in 2009, representing an increase of 437 incidents, or 42 per cent, over 2008, according to a report released June 7 on police-reported hate crimes.

More than half – 54 per cent – were motivated by race or ethnicity, while 29 per cent were motivated by religion and 13 per cent by sexual orientation, Statistics Canada said.
