Cumbria police warning over thefts of lead from church roofs

Police have issued advice to churches in north and west Cumbria following a rise in lead thefts.

Raids have taken place at churches in Longtown, Wetheral and Silloth in the last four to six weeks.

Claire Stevens, a crime prevention officer with Cumbria police, said: “There has been an increase in the number of lead thefts from churches, just like there has been a rise in the number of fuel thefts.

“There has been a rise in the cost of these items and thieves are stealing it and weighing it in.
