DeLand church appeals for return of stolen artwork

| July 29, 2011

The Rev. Tom Connery wants his picture back.

Father Tom, as he is known to the congregation at St. Peter Catholic Church in downtown DeLand, made an appeal for the return of the "Divine Mercy" print in last Sunday's church bulletin.

Connery said a couple from the church traveled to Poland a few years ago and visited the site where a Catholic nun, Sister Mary Faustina, had a vision from the Lord in 1931 that led to a painting of Jesus that emphasized his heart. They brought back the framed print as a gift to Connery.

In 1935, Faustina received another revelation in the form of a prayer that should be said in front of the Divine Mercy image.

So every Friday morning, the print was taken from a storage area outside the Sacristy at the DeLand church and placed in the chapel for a short prayer service, Connery said.,0,5491235.story
