Despair as All Saints Church in Scunthorpe is hit by vandals

| July 20, 2010

VANDALS launched bricks into the windows of a Scunthorpe church and made off with cash from charity boxes inside.

The church must now spend a hard-earned £1,000, raised at last weekend's church fair, on repairs.

The church warden at All Saints', Warwick Road, Scunthorpe, said the attacks are "demoralising".

Ian Hilton, 64, of Scunthorpe, said: "I worked so hard at the church fair on Saturday and spent weeks planning it.

"This is just demoralising – it's mindless vandalism."

The yobs struck in broad daylight on Saturday.

Churchgoers finished their morning service at midday, then when someone returned at 3pm they found a window smashed and iron bars ripped out of the women's toilets.

Mr Hilton said: "Someone had got through that way into the vestry. It looks like they were disturbed when someone came in."

Money was taken from a Haiti Appeal charity box and an honesty box for the church magazine.

But that was not the end of it. Mr Hilton received a phone call yesterday morning saying more windows had been smashed overnight.

As previously reported, many windows have had to be replaced. Durable plastic has been used instead of glass after vandals targeted the building six times in 12 months.

"The double-glazed window at the front had been smashed and a brick was found in the church," said Mr Hilton. "We've had polycarbonate windows fitted and they were marked as well – it looked like someone had a go at them, but they wouldn't break.

"We'd have to have the whole place bricked up to make them stop."

Mr Hilton believes the vandals are local youths.

"They tend to gather in groups and police move them on," he said. "It's a lack of morals. They're not having a Christian upbringing – the church is just another building for them to vandalise."

Police received a call at 3.53pm on Saturday, July 17, in connection with a burglary at All Saints' Church, East Common Lane, Scunthorpe.

A Humberside Police spokesman said: "An unknown person has entered the church and stolen cash from charity boxes within the church.

"One of the windows has also been damaged."

Anyone with information should call police on 0845 60 60 222 quoting LOG 445 17/07/10.
