| May 22, 2014

A 53-year-old East Palo Alto man who allegedly attacked his ex-girlfriend at a church function and knocked his mother to the ground when she tried to intervene pleaded not guilty Monday to assault with a deadly weapon, elder abuse and domestic violence charges.

Leonard Dwayne Holt was already on probation for misdemeanor domestic violence and prohibited from contacting his ex-girlfriend when he entered St. Samuel's Church in East Palo Alto at about 2:30 p.m. on May 15, according to the San Mateo County District Attorney's Office.

His ex-girlfriend was at the church for a volunteer function. After Holt barged into the event, she ran into the church's kitchen to try to escape. But he chased her around folding tables before knocking her to the ground and punching and kicking her, according to the District Attorney's Office.

Holt's 77-year-old mother, who attended the church event, tried to get her son to stop beating his ex-girlfriend. But he knocked his mother down and began kicking her as well as his ex-girlfriend, according to the District Attorney's Office.
