Elmhurst resident sentenced to three years in theft from church

| April 29, 2012

Elmhurst, IL – DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert B. Berlin announced today that Robert C. Drefs, 54, 107 E. Wilson, Elmhurst, was sentenced to three years in the Illinois Department of Corrections for stealing more than $54,000 from the Messiah Lutheran Church in Elmhurst.

Today’s sentencing stems from allegations that from July 25, 2008 through May 31, 2010, while volunteering as treasurer at the church, Drefs wrote himself unauthorized checks from a church bank account.

In addition, Drefs wrote checks to a defunct company whose still-active bank account he had access to, according to the state's attorney. Drefs would then withdraw money from the account for his own personal use. His scheme was uncovered when the church found discrepancies in their books following an internal audit.
