Employee accused of stealing from church filed bankruptcy this year

| May 14, 2013

SKANEATELES | A surveillance camera caught a contract employee allegedly stealing money from St. James Episcopal Church's safe Sunday, May 5.

The next day, the Skaneateles Police Department arrested 71-year-old Robert F. Usowski, of Auburn, according to Police Chief Lloyd Perkins. An unspecified amount of money was recovered from Usowski at the time of the arrest, Perkins said.

Earlier this month, Usowski filed for Chapter 13 bankruptcy in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Northern District of New York. According to court records, he owes Capital One $8,000. Chapter 13 requires the debtor to repay the amount owed.

Perkins said the investigation revealed that the Auburn man allegedly removed money from the safe over the course of three months.

"There may be more charges," Perkins said, adding that the district attorney is reviewing the case to make that determination.
